Sections K, KII and KIII consist of a series of specifications that cover railway electronics for remote systems (both fixed and mobile) and coupled with electronic specifications in Section M of the Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices covers the physical, logical and electrical interfaces for these remote systems. These specifications cover the interface communications between office systems and locomotives/wayside (remotes), between locomotives and wayside and between objects onboard the locomotive. Other specifications cover the end of train communications, automatic equipment identification, remote control of locomotives and environmental requirements to complete the suite of standards and specifications. These standards are bundled into three sections, and currently can only be ordered by each section not by each standard or specification.
Section K consists of the following standards:
• S5700 Railroad Electronics Standards Configuration Management
• S5701 End of Train Communications
• S-5702 Railroad Electronics Environmental Requirements
• S-918 Standard for Automatic Equipment Identification
• S-918A AEI Site to Host Consist Reporting Format.
In addition, a single specification covers the process to configuration manage these specifications. Each specification is version controlled. The version quoted is the most recent railroad approved version.
